Do memories tell you who you are? Then you are in trouble, because scientists have found that memory is 50% false. I recently watched a documentary on memory (The Memory Mirage, The Nature of Things). Here’s what I learned, and what the most critical question for you is now.
What are you? You are not a thought. You are not a memory.
Only when you stop imagining yourself and others to be your memory will you be able to see the Truth of existence.
A lot of people value “making memories” over accumulating material things. A long time ago, I saw they were just as temporary and so of little value also. That led me to get very serious about what really matters. Something must matter!?! In the midst of all this impermanence, all this temporary experience–something must matter?!
That raised the bar on what matters–to the Eternal. It is the only thing worth striving for, the only valuable way of using this temporary life. The good news is, that the experience of the Eternal is of love and joy. So, seeking the Real, the Eternal also takes care of the temporary experience. It’s win-win-win 🙂
Note: although the temporary is not worth striving for, it does not mean we do not strive for it–just don’t place it in the highest priority, and don’t cling to it, as real, true, or ultimately important–and keep your eye on the prize! Always, the Eternal.
Until next time, keep it real.
